In Germany, it is considered bad luck for German sailors if someone lights his cigarette with candle.

In the old days, during bad weather or when they were not at sea, German sailor would make matches and sell them in the local bars to support their life. If the locals lit their cigarette with candle, then the sailor could make their living by selling matches.
