This is a superstition about Christmas In Ireland, there is a belief that the gates of Heaven will open at midnight on Christmas Eve. For all the people who die on Christmas Day, they will go straight to Heaven.

In Greece, there is a belief of creatures called Kallikantzaroi playing pranks or make havoc of the home during the twelve days of Christmas, between Christmas itself and Epiphany on January 6th. In order to keeps the creatures away, some people burn their old shoes which produce a nasty smell to keep the Kallikantzaroi from entering by the chimney.
